A reservation and online-ordering site for a seasonal farm-to-table bistro
Birch & Salt Kitchen
About the project
Birch & Salt Kitchen is a seasonal, farm-to-table bistro with a menu that changes with what local growers bring in. Their old site fought against that rhythm: the menu was a PDF, reservations bounced to a third-party page, and takeout meant a phone call. We rebuilt the site to match how the restaurant actually works, with a menu the team edits daily, direct table booking, and clean online ordering for pickup.
Technologies we used
What was holding them back
A restaurant built on freshness was let down by a website that felt stale and friction-filled.
- The menu lived in a PDF. Every change meant exporting and re-uploading a file, so the seasonal menu online rarely matched what was actually being served.
- Reservations sent guests away. Booking a table kicked visitors to a generic third-party page, breaking the brand and dropping people before they confirmed.
- Takeout meant a phone call. There was no online ordering, so pickup orders piled up on the line during the dinner rush and many were simply missed.
- Painfully slow on mobile. Heavy images and a bloated theme made the site crawl on phones, where nearly every reservation and order begins.
- Photos that did not sell the food. Low-quality, poorly cropped images undersold a kitchen whose whole appeal is how the plates look and taste.
What success looked like
The goal was a website as fresh and effortless as the food, where booking a table or ordering takeout takes seconds and the team stays in control.
Objectives list
- Replace the PDF with a menu the team updates daily in minutes.
- Let guests reserve a table without leaving the site.
- Add online ordering for pickup with clear timing.
- Make every page load fast on a phone.
- Show the food with appetite-first photography and layout.
- Highlight seasonal specials and local growers.
- Capture emails for a seasonal supper-club list.
- Keep the brand warm, local, and consistent throughout.
“Our menu changes constantly, and for the first time the website keeps up with us instead of holding us back. Guests book a table in seconds and our takeout orders come in clean, not shouted across a busy line. It looks like our food finally, which is to say, good enough to eat.”
Self-managed seasonal menu
The menu is now a structured part of the site, not a file. Staff add a dish, set its price, flag it as a special, and publish in minutes, so the online menu always matches the kitchen. When a grower drops off something new in the morning, it can be on the website before the lunch rush. The reservation widget sits right alongside, powered by the OpenTable feed so availability is always live.
Two paths, one smooth experience
- Dine-in guests. live table availability and one-tap booking without ever leaving the brand, plus a clear view of tonight's seasonal specials.
- Takeout customers. a tidy WooCommerce ordering flow with accurate pickup times and saved favorites for repeat orders.
- The restaurant team. a single place to edit the menu, post specials, and manage orders, with no developer in the loop.
Hungry for a website that works this hard?
We gave Birch & Salt a site as fresh as their menu, and it filled more tables. Let us do the same for your restaurant.
Discuss a projectReal, measurable outcomes
After launch, the restaurant saw measurable gains across every channel the site touches. Direct reservations climbed, online takeout became a real revenue stream, and the kitchen stopped fielding menu questions because the website finally kept up.
