A direct-booking website for a wilderness lodge and guided tour operator
Aurora Ridge Lodge
About the project
Aurora Ridge Lodge offers cabins, aurora-viewing stays, and guided backcountry tours near Denali. Most of their bookings came through travel platforms that took a heavy commission on every stay, and their own website earned almost no search traffic. We rebuilt it as a fast, content-rich Astro site engineered for organic discovery and direct booking, so guests find the lodge first and reserve without a middleman.
Technologies we used
What was holding them back
The lodge was paying to be found and paying again to be booked, all while owning a website that did neither job.
- Dependent on commission-heavy platforms. Nearly every reservation came through travel sites that took a large cut, eroding margin on a business with a short, high-stakes season.
- Almost no organic search traffic. Thin pages and missing structured data meant the lodge never surfaced for aurora-viewing and Denali lodging searches travelers actually use.
- No way to book direct. The website could not take a reservation, so even guests who found it were pushed back to a third-party platform to complete their stay.
- Weak storytelling. The remote setting, the tours, and the aurora were the whole product, yet the site reduced them to a few generic paragraphs.
- Slow to load from afar. A bloated build and unoptimized media made the site sluggish for travelers planning from across the country and overseas.
What success looked like
The goal was to make the lodge's own website its best salesperson, so guests discover it organically and book directly at full margin.
Objectives list
- Win organic rankings for aurora and Denali-area lodging searches.
- Take direct, paid reservations on the site.
- Reduce dependence on commission-heavy travel platforms.
- Tell the lodge and tour story with rich, immersive content.
- Load fast for travelers planning from anywhere.
- Structure stays, tours, and seasons into clear, searchable pages.
- Capture interest for an aurora-season notification list.
- Keep the experience calm, premium, and on-brand throughout.
“For years the platforms owned our customers and took a cut of every night. Now travelers find us first, read our story, and book straight through our own site. The difference in what we keep per stay has been the single biggest change to the business, and the site is a joy to run.”
Direct booking, full margin
Each cabin and tour now has its own page with live availability and a Stripe-powered reservation flow, so guests book and pay on the lodge's own site. Every direct booking skips the platform commission entirely. Pairing that with content built for search means more travelers arrive through organic results and convert without a third party in the way, which compounds the savings over a season.
Content that ranks and converts
- First-time visitors. immersive guides to aurora season, the cabins, and the surrounding backcountry that answer the questions travelers actually search.
- Tour seekers. dedicated pages for each guided experience, with difficulty, season, and what to expect, leading straight to a booking.
- The lodge team. a headless CMS for publishing stories, updating availability, and adjusting rates without touching the codebase.

Discuss a projectReal, measurable outcomes
Within two seasons, the lodge's own website went from an afterthought to its leading booking channel. Organic traffic grew sharply, direct reservations rose, and the share of bookings flowing through commission-heavy platforms fell, lifting margin on every stay.
